5 Common Skincare Mistakes That Can Make Acne Worse

Scrubbing harder, skipping moisturiser, popping pimples — five everyday habits that can quietly keep acne going.
When acne flares, it's natural to want to do more. But some of the most common responses can actually make breakouts worse. Here are five habits worth changing.
1. Over-washing and harsh scrubbing
Washing many times a day or using rough scrubs strips the skin and damages its barrier. Irritated skin can respond with more inflammation. Twice-daily cleansing with a gentle, non-comedogenic cleanser is usually enough.
2. Skipping moisturiser
Oily and acne-prone skin still needs hydration — especially while using acne treatments that dry the skin. A light, oil-free moisturiser helps you tolerate treatment and keeps the barrier healthy.
3. Picking and popping pimples
Squeezing pushes inflammation deeper, increases the risk of infection and is one of the biggest causes of dark marks and scars. If a pimple is painful or large, it's better to have it treated.
4. Using too many actives at once
Combining several strong ingredients — acids, retinoids, benzoyl peroxide and more — can leave skin red, peeling and more reactive. Fewer, well-chosen products used consistently work better.
5. Using products or oils that clog pores
Heavy creams, certain sunscreens, makeup and even hair oils that touch the forehead can trigger breakouts. Look for products labelled non-comedogenic and keep hair products away from the face.
A simpler approach
A calm, consistent routine plus the right treatment is usually far more effective than doing more. If acne persists despite these changes, a dermatologist can identify what's driving it and create a plan that fits your skin.
